Winter is here which means our hair and skin are going to take a brutal hit from mother nature. Dry hair and skin are one of my biggest pet peeves. There are so many useful and helpful tips for maintaining soft and supple hair during the colder seasons. I’ve compiled my 5 best tips for keeping your natural hair or chemically treated hair moisturized, healthy and ready to tackle old man winter.
1) Turn down the heat: Now, I’m not saying to drive in an ice box of a car or have your home feel like a scene from Disney’s Frozen. However, try keeping your thermostat in your cars and homes closer to the midway section versus maximum heat. Think about this in terms of heat styling. When we apply too much heat or extreme heat to our hair it can damage our hair in just one application right? However, if we use the right temperature while heat styling we can minimize the probability of heat damage. The same goes for heat in our homes and cars. Rather than cranking up the heat, turn down the thermostat and dress a bit warmer to minimize stripping the hair of moisture. I promise, your hair will thank you for it.
2) Use a humidifier: Since winter usually brings about frigid temps and bitter winds we tend to turn up the heat in our cars and homes. The heat in turn sucks out every bit of moisture right out of our hair. You’ll get a two-for-one deal with using a humidifier. A humidifier will replenish moisture back into the air which will in turn prevent your hair from drying out. I bought my humidifier from Walgreens for less than $20. Just be sure to clean your humidifier regularly and properly while in use.
3) Satin lined hats: Winter and fall are all about the cute, chunky and funky hats! The problem is that we tend to wear cotton/wool hats that can cause a lot of friction and deplete moisture. This is a leading culprit of frizz and breakage of our hair regardless of texture. I recommend seeking out satin lined hats for your natural mane during the winter months. The satin lining will prevent the wool/cotton lining from depleting your hair of moisture while preventing dreaded hat hair!
4) Use butters: I tend to use butters such as shea and mango butter on my hair and skin during the colder months. Butters will help to achieve and retain moisture due to their abilities to soothe dry/irritated scalp much more efficiently during colder seasons. Butters also aid as a natural heat protectant and sealant especially during winter months when use of heat and heated hair appliances is at an all time high. Butters also have a higher capability to soften dry, brittle, fragile curly and relaxed hair. Using products that contain these ingredients will maximize moisture root to tip while helping you to achieve and maintain optimal hair health.
5) Calcium Bentonite Clay: I absolutely love using bentonite clay on my hair and skin. I use Aztec Secret’s Indian Healing Clay. It is such a great addition to your hair and beauty regimen because of it’s deep scalp and pore cleansing capabilities. Bentonite clay also helps to cleanse and lift impurities from the hair, aiding in conditioning, shine, softness, and definition. Here is a quick tutorial on how to use this mask to replenish moisture and boost definition to dry winter natural or relaxed hair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XM2WqxEDfo
Bonus Tip: Be sure to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Drinking water is by far the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to make sure your hair stays soft and supple during the harsh and cold winter months.
