I Tried 3 Natural Deodorants For 1 Year: Here’s What Happened

We all know that natural deodorants have the reputation of not working too great. Also, many of them are labeled as “natural” but they all aren’t necessarily non-toxic. Pregnancy safe deodorant became a priority for me last pregnancy so I’ve been at this for a while now. I’ve been using 3 different non-toxic brands for the last year and I wanted to share my honest thoughts about Lone Deodorant, Honestly pHresh and Primal Pit Paste.

Why Switch To A Natural & Non-Toxic Deodorant?

There are many things to consider making the switch for your pits. Did you know that sweat is actually odorless? Sweat serves as a natural detox for our bodies, skin and pits. The funk or B.O you smell coming from your pits upon sweating is the result of the bacteria on our skin mixing with and breaking down our sweat.

Something else to consider is the fact that traditional deodorants and antiperspirants have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, Alzheimer’s and even hyperpigmentation of the arm pits. Antiperspirants contain aluminum. Aluminum temporarily blocks out sweat glands to prevent sweating.

Remember, our sweat is odorless. Sweat combining with bacteria on our skin is what causes B.O. When we sweat, our bodies are getting rid of toxins that can potentially build up and take refuge in various systems and organs. This creates the perfect breeding ground for various illnesses and conditions.

Lone Deodorant

I found out about Lone Deodorant via Instagram. I went over to their website and read all about the brand product and their mission. ic deodorant, armpit detox, how to detox your armpits, plant based deodorant, honestly phresh, lone body care, primal pit paste, green beauty, pregnancy safe deodorantWhat I love about this brand is that they don’t use baking soda in their deodorants. They created a formula that utilizes Dead Sea salts to help fight odors on contact. The Dead Sea Salts are much more gentle on the skin and does not run the risk of ruining your clothes. My black and white tees LOVE this deodorant! This deodorant is also free of aluminum, artificial fragrance, triclosan, parabens, propolyene glycol and phthalates. It is also reasonably priced at $9.95 a stick.

Lone Thoughts

Lone Deodorant also has 2 formulas, each with 3 scents to choose from. Their original line seems to work great for most pits. To be perfectly honest, I ordered their “Bold” line off the strength of the name & that this formula must be stronger than the original line. The scents I chose were “Sweet Lavender” and “Unscent”.

“Sweet Lavender” was an instant fave! I applied in the morning and my pits were still fresh by 8pm. Absolutely no funk & I went a little over 12 hours without reapplying. Less application means longer use time. I’d say that’s beyond effective! “Unscent” held up the same way. The only thing is I realized is I like a bit of a scent for my pits so I probably won’t order this scent again (unless my husband wants to try it).

I recently ordered “Mint” from Lone’s Bold line. I equally love this scent as I do “Sweet Lavender”. Again, no funk and no need to reapply. Neither of these scents are overbearing. They are just strong enough to know that you’re fresh and don’t need to the fake yawn to check your pits! Another positive to note is that I noticed my pits are much more moisturized. This is probably due to the cocoa butter and jojoba oil in each of their formulas. The icing on the cake is that this is a pregnancy safe deodorant that actually works!

Shipping is super cheap and extremely fast guys. My last order was here within 3 days of placing it through their website https://lonedeodorant.com/.

Last but not least: I love the fact that Lone Deodorant company is a small Black-Owned Business! As a conscious consumer, I try to patronize businesses owned by POC whenever possible. The story behind how this company came about is interesting and inspiring. Lone also has a collection of lip and body products available that are definitely worth checking out. I can’t recommend Lone Deodorant enough.

Honestly pHresh

I learned about Honestly pHresh through Chelsea Williams of ThatsChelsea.com. Chelsea is trusted in the wellness & beauty community for her honest reviews and breathtaking digital content. When she reviews a product, many of us listen and take note.ic deodorant, armpit detox, how to detox your armpits, plant based deodorant, honestly phresh, lone body care, primal pit paste, green beauty, pregnancy safe deodorant

After checking the brand’s website + Amazon reviews I decided to give them a try. The deodorants come in three forms: roll-on, stick and spray. Each product uses a combination of prebiotics, minerals and essential oils to keep the pits fresh and free of irritation. Honestly pHresh products are free of aluminum, baking soda, parabens, GMOS, phthalates, synthetic fragrances. This is another pregnancy safe deodorant. Similar to Lone, Honestly pHresh is also reasonably priced at just under $10 for a 2.25 oz stick.

Honestly Speaking

I ordered one deodorant stick in “Sugar Mint” and a Pre/Pro Biotic Deodorant Spray in the Frangiapani and Monoi scent.ic deodorant, armpit detox, how to detox your armpits, plant based deodorant, honestly phresh, lone body care, primal pit paste, green beauty, pregnancy safe deodorant

First, I loved the scents of both the spray and the deodorant. Neither stained my clothes which was also a plus. Their deodorant spray can be sprayed everywhere externally for full body deodorant coverage. This would be ideal for refreshing at the gym pre/post workout.

I did have to reapply the deodorant after 3-4 hours. The spray didn’t last past 4 hours either but I definitely prefer it over their deodorant. I strongly believe my body chemistry is the reason this brand didn’t work that well for me. Is it something I’ll order again? Probably not. However, I wouldn’t discourage anyone form purchasing from this brand either. Honestly pHresh is a deodorant you can trust due to its clean and non-toxic ingredients. You also may have a different experience than me so don’t count them out. Check out this very detailed review of Honestly pHresh from Chelsea Williams.

Primal Pit Paste

Primal Pit Paste is a brand I came across on Facebook about 3 years ago. I was a fan of the brand when I tried it back then so I decided to revisit their products.ic deodorant, armpit detox, how to detox your armpits, plant based deodorant, honestly phresh, lone body care, primal pit paste, green beauty, pregnancy safe deodorant Primal Pit Paste deodorants contain only 6 ingredients: Organic Shea Butter, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Non-Aluminum Baking Soda, Organic Coconut Oil, Candelilla Wax, Non-GMO Vitamin E derived 100% from Sunflowers. This was the only brand I tried that contained baking soda. You can purchase traditional sticks, jars or sample minis. Another difference to note is that their jar and mini deodorants come in levels 1-3 for strength. The deodorant sticks start at level 2. This is another pregnancy safe deodorant.

The “Pitty” Gritty

I originally ordered 3 minis to try the brand out before committing to a full purchase. They are priced at $3.95 per jar or you can purchase a 6-pack for $20. They usually add a 7th jar for free with this option.

I repurchased their “Unscented” jar and “Coconut Lime” stick. As mentioned, I was a fan of Primal Pit Paste in the past. It worked great, smelled great and I never needed to reapply. This time around I had way different results. I’m not sure if their formula changed from 3 years ago or if it’s a result of my body chemistry changing in that time. Either way, I could not keep using their sticks. Both scents gave me the same outcome. However, my 15-year-old niece is OBSESSED with Primal Pit Paste. I’ve already placed 4 orders for her. She says it lasts all day and she doesn’t have to reapply. She’s an athlete (Varsity soccer) just to give you an idea of how well it works for her.

If you’re sensitive to baking soda or just want a baking soda free option, you can try two other scents from Primal Pit Paste. “Charcoal Magnesium Daily Detox” & “Sensitive Unscented” are both baking soda free.

Final Thoughts

There’s no question that there are a TON of non-toxic natural deodorants on the market. Finding a pregnancy safe deodorant can be equally overwhelming. I’ve tried so many other brands but we’d legit be here all day if I went through all of them.

My tips? Do your research. You want to make sure you educate yourself on the ingredients beyond the pretty packaging. Learn what ingredients work with your body chemistry. Be prepared for a lot of trial and error and hope for the best with fresh pits! Also, be sure to detox your armpits before you try a new deodorant. Check out my quick post here on how and why you should detox your armpits before making the switch to a natural deodorant.

Have you made the switch? What are your favorite non-toxic pregnancy safe deodorant brands?
